Education and length of practice are considered through a formal pay-setting process to determine the final compensable salary (Base Pay + Market Pay) The Robley Rex VA Medical Center in Louisville, Kentucky is recruiting for an Assistant Chief of Medicine Service to serve as a full-time medical service physician. The position is accountable to the Chief of Medicine, for assuring the most effective delivery of state-of-the-art care by meeting or exceeding compliance standards. To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Board Certification in any of the following fields preferred. Internal Medicine Pulmonary/ICU Cardiology Endocrinology Gastroenterology Hematology/Oncology Infectious Disease Nephrology Rheumatology Neurology Sleep Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. ["The Assistant Chief of Medicine is responsible for the assistance with the overall operation, oversight, planning, and management of Medicine service. This position provides administrative, clinical, and programmatic leadership for Medicine Service to ensure appropriate performance measures are achieved. Examples include optimization of outpatient specialty clinic access and efficiency and Inpatient performance metrics/SMR/HWR/ORYX. The Assistant Chief of Medicine will be expected to collaborate with other service lines and periodically with other VA medical centers, and to support compliance with various oversight administrative and clinical entities. The position anticipates clinical, teaching, and administrative contributions, the proportions fluctuating in response to service needs. This position reports directly to the Chief of Medicine Service. Duties include, but are not limited to: Monitoring and ensuring that Specialty Care Service complies with agency regulations, medical staff bylaws, facility policies, Joint Commission (JC) standards, and other regulations. Overseeing professional and administrative activities within the assigned division including selection, orientation and continuing education of staff in collaboration with other Physician leaders. Assisting in coordination of program development to strengthen Medicine Service clinical programs and operational issues; and advise the Chief of Medicine about the adequacy and appropriateness of the organizations scope of services and its professional and support staff. Assuring that individuals with clinical privileges competently provide service within the scope of privileges granted. Recommending appointment and clinical privileges for each member of the division and others requesting privileges within the division. Acts as a liaison between the affiliate, University of Louisville, and VA on matters. Developing and implementing policies and procedures; oversight of administrative and programmatic resources; and monitoring outcomes using data-driven quality assurance processes. Utilizing 40% of their time providing clinical services to Veterans within their specialty and privileges. These duties may include clinical appointments, conducting diagnostic evaluations, medication management and consultations. Areas of responsibility include but are not limited to: Cardiology, Pulmonary, Respiratory Therapy, Sleep, Gastroenterology, Infectious Disease, Nephrology, Hematology/ Oncology/ Chemo, Dermatology, Endocrinology, Neurology, Hospitalist team and Rheumatology.
