Description
The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is seeking a health services researcher to serve as Head of the Division of Health Care Policy and Research. within the Department of Medicine. The Division Head will provide strategic and operational leadership to advance a nationally visible, collaborative, and scalable research enterprise that supports the Department’s clinical, educational, and research missions. This leader will shape and execute a divisional research strategy, foster strong connections within the department, and integrate health services research across the Department and campus.
The Division Head is responsible for maintaining a professional environment that facilitates research productivity, creativity, innovation, and equity, and for supporting the professional health and wellness of faculty, trainees, and staff. This includes mentoring junior faculty, supporting Department quality improvement initiatives, and advancing the Division’s role in the campus’s translational research programs. In close partnership with departmental leadership, campus partners, and affiliated centers, the Division Head will position the Division of Health Care Policy and Research as a trusted partner and institutional hub for health services research.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities of the Division Head
- Lead health care policy, health services, and outcomes research that advances understanding of health care delivery, financing, quality, and value, and supports the Division’s research and educational missions.
- Ensure the highest quality and national visibility of the Division’s research, other scholarly/academic activities, and community outreach programs.
- Promote the Departmental priorities of interdisciplinary program development, career development, diversity of its workforce, and integrated program development with its affiliates.
- Assure the mentorship of trainees and faculty with the goals of career development and progression toward promotion.
- Recruit, retain, and academically develop faculty in the Division.
- Conduct annual reviews of individual faculty members and staff that include assessing employee satisfaction and engagement, and prepare written performance reviews on at least an annual basis.
- Manage all fiscal aspects of the Division and maintain a fiscally independent and sustainable Division, including appropriate stewardship and involvement with philanthropic fundraising.
- Personally participate in regularly scheduled meetings of the Department of Medicine’s Division Heads and other ad hoc departmental meetings.
- Work positively and collaboratively with ACCORDS, the Farley Health Policy Center, the Center for Bioethics and Humanities, the Colorado Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and School of Medicine and Anschutz Medical Campus leadership to foster the growth and development of the multiple missions of the Division.
- Support, develop, and provide leadership for health services and pragmatic research initiatives and innovation within the department, school, and health care system.
- Demonstrate a willingness to work with diverse students, fellows, and colleagues, and mentor diverse students and junior colleagues.
- Develop and implement new programs that address the research, learning health system, and implementation science skills required to facilitate the implementation of innovations to improve care and value in academic medicine.
- Develop performance metrics for faculty.
- Support the Anschutz health services research community through education and consultation.
- Collaboratively develop and maintain a strong mission and vision for the Division.
IDEAL EXPERIENCE
A national/international reputation for personal academic accomplishments
A record of outstanding credentials, academic accomplishments within health services research, and the experience and national reputation necessary to sustain the history of excellence within the Division. A history of federally funded health services or translational research or experience with large, multicenter pragmatic trials or outcomes research is desirable. A record of recruiting, developing, and retaining health services research investigators is crucial.
Healthcare administrative leadership
Accomplished administrative leadership experience in a complex academic institution. Knowledge of the financial complexities, payer models, and associated reimbursement in providing high-quality, cost-effective specialty health care.
Education / Certification / Licensure
MD, MD/PhD, or international equivalent terminal degree preferred; PhD candidates with a demonstrated track record of collaborative leadership with physician leaders will be considered. Candidates with an MD must be eligible for licensure in Colorado.
Clinical and Research Excellence
Exceptional reputation in health services, health policy, or outcomes research, with a strong track record of securing grant funding and publishing in peer-reviewed journals. Leadership and participation in national or international societies are a plus.
